Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, has just been sworn in as mayor, and his inauguration was anything but ordinary. In a private ceremony held just after midnight in a beautifully preserved, but abandoned, beaux-arts subway station, Mamdani officially took office. This wasn't your typical mayoral swearing-in; it was a symbolic gesture, a nod to the importance of public transportation and the working class that keeps New York City running. The ceremony was intimate, attended by close family, including his mother, the acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, a professor of African studies at Columbia University. He placed his hand on his grandfather's Qur'an and another belonging to Arturo Schomburg, a Black writer and historian, on loan from the New York Public Library. This made him the first mayor of New York City to be sworn in using the Qur'an, a powerful symbol of inclusivity and representation. It's a moment that resonates deeply with the city's diverse Muslim community, but it also raises questions about the role of religion in public office.
The guest list itself was a statement. It included not only political figures but also a diverse group of New Yorkers: actor John Turturro, playwright Cole Escola, writer Colson Whitehead, advocates, small business owners, and campaign workers. According to Mamdani's office, these individuals were selected for an inaugural committee to provide "perspective, guidance and cultural sensibility" for the ceremony.

His electoral potential became clear earlier in the year when he defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in a primary vote. Adams, facing scrutiny from federal prosecutors, opted not to seek the Democratic nomination, paving the way for Mamdani's ascent.
Initially trailing Cuomo by a significant margin, Mamdani's campaign gained momentum through social media and grassroots efforts. In November, Mamdani, then a state assemblyman, secured the election with 50.78% of the vote, defeating Republican activist Curtis Sliwa and Cuomo.
