Attention all creators: Western Digital just shook up the storage game, and it’s a big deal. In a bold move, WD has unified its entire creator storage lineup under the G-DRIVE brand, phasing out the SanDisk Professional name entirely. By the end of this month, all SanDisk Professional products will officially transition to the G-DRIVE label, with newly branded units already hitting the market. This shift comes on the heels of Western Digital’s spin-off into a standalone hard disk drive company in early 2025. While WD continues to cater to diverse markets—think WD Gold for enterprises, WD Purple for surveillance, and WD_BLACK for gamers—the G-DRIVE brand is now the undisputed flagship for professional content creators.
Why the change? WD is betting big on G-DRIVE’s legacy as a trusted name in creator storage, especially for portable and desktop drives. Darrin Bulik, Director of Product Management at WD, puts it this way: “G-DRIVE has become synonymous with reliable, high-capacity, high-performance storage for creatives at every stage, from hobbyists to pros.” By consolidating its portfolio under this brand, WD aims to honor that reputation while leveraging its cutting-edge storage innovations. But is this enough to win over creators in an increasingly competitive market? That’s the million-dollar question.
The rebrand spans the entire creative lifecycle, from capturing footage to editing, backup, and post-production. And don’t worry—existing SanDisk Professional products will still receive full support and warranty coverage. But this is the part most people miss: WD isn’t just slapping a new label on old products. The renewed G-DRIVE lineup introduces significant upgrades and expansions.
Take the G-DRIVE ArmourATD, for example. This rugged portable drive is built for the toughest conditions, with shock resistance, an IP54 rating for dust and water protection, and capacities up to 6TB. Perfect for on-location shoots, it’s a mobile creator’s dream. For studio setups, the standard G-DRIVE desktop drive offers a whopping 26TB of storage, powered by WD’s Ultrastar HDDs, ideal for massive photo libraries and video editing.
And then there’s the G-DRIVE Project, a single-bay Thunderbolt 3 unit also maxing out at 26TB, designed for creators who need sustained throughput for large media files. At the high end, the G-RAID Project 2—a dual-bay Thunderbolt 3 system—delivers up to 52TB, configured as RAID 0 for blazing-fast speeds. For truly massive storage needs, the G-RAID Shuttle 4 and G-RAID Shuttle 8 offer up to 208TB across four and eight bays, respectively, with RAID 5 protection for on-set data handling.
But here’s the controversial bit: While WD’s lineup is undeniably impressive, some creators might argue that consolidating everything under G-DRIVE dilutes the brand’s identity.
