A thrilling shootout victory for the Florida Panthers has brought an end to their four-game losing streak, with Anton Lundell's return from injury proving pivotal. The Panthers emerged victorious with a 5-4 shootout win over the Boston Bruins at Amerant Bank Arena, a much-needed boost for the team's morale and standings.
Lundell, who missed three games due to an upper-body injury, made an immediate impact with a goal and two assists. His performance, along with strong showings from Matthew Tkachuk and Uvis Balinskis, helped the Panthers secure the win.
"We witnessed some incredible performances tonight," said Florida coach Paul Maurice. "Our players showed an incredible work ethic, and that's what carried us through."
The Bruins, despite extending their point streak to seven games, couldn't quite pull off the win. Michael Eyssimont's two goals and Hampus Lindholm's two assists were not enough to secure the victory, as the Panthers' special teams made the difference.
"It was a tough battle," said Bruins coach Marco Sturm. "We've been grinding it out, and these points are crucial. We just need to improve our shootout performance; it could be the difference-maker in tight games."
The Bruins found themselves trailing by two goals going into the third period but fought back valiantly. Mark Kastelic's goal at 7:52 of the third period and Casey Mittelstadt's power-play goal at 10:30 brought the game to a tie, forcing overtime.
"We never give up," Mittelstadt said. "We've shown all season that we'll fight until the end. It's a huge relief to get a point, but we wanted that extra one."
The game's opening goal came from Eetu Luostarinen, who capitalized on a turnover in the first period. Eyssimont then tied the game with a breakaway goal, and followed it up with another goal after exiting the penalty box, giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
Balinskis tied the game again at the start of the second period with a power-play goal, assisted by Tkachuk. Tkachuk then put the Panthers back in front with a power-play goal of his own, banking the puck off the goalie from behind the goal line.
Lundell's short-handed goal in the third period gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead, a crucial moment in the game. His return and impact were a key factor in the Panthers' success.
"It's a great feeling to be back," Lundell said. "We know our position in the standings, and every game is crucial. We're aiming to improve and win every game from here on out."
The game also saw some notable individual achievements. David Pastrnak, who had an assist, will be flying to Italy to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where he will be the flag-bearer for Czechia. Bruins forward Morgan Geekie extended his point streak to eight games, showcasing his consistent performance.
Sergei Bobrovsky, the Panthers' goalie, made history by becoming the eighth goalie in NHL history to reach 450 wins, doing so in the fewest games (793), surpassing Marc-Andre Fleury's record.
As the Olympic break approaches, the Bruins and Panthers will look to build on their performances and continue their push for success in the league.
