The provincial government has announced a significant expansion of cancer coverage for firefighters under the Workers Compensation Act. This move is a powerful acknowledgment of the increased cancer risks these heroes face on the job.
Eight New Cancers Added to the List:

- Mesothelioma
- Soft tissue sarcoma
- Laryngeal cancer
- Tracheal cancer
- Bronchial cancer
- Nose cancer

Firefighters will now have better access to workers' compensation benefits and support services, recognizing the elevated risk of work-related cancers they endure.
Premier David Eby emphasized, "Our firefighters are everyday heroes, and we're ensuring they have the backing they deserve." This change will benefit over 15,000 firefighters, including career, volunteer, federal, and provincial firefighters, as well as those employed by First Nations and Indigenous organizations.
A Collaborative Effort
The decision is a result of years of joint efforts between the government and firefighters' associations. Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour, highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving nature of firefighting, stating, "We're committed to ensuring the workers' compensation system reflects the realities of their challenging work."
Presumptive Cancer Coverage: How It Works
The Workers' Compensation Act amendment allows firefighters diagnosed with any of the listed cancers after a certain employment period to access benefits without proving the cancer's occupational origin.
The minimum employment period for esophageal cancer coverage has been reduced from 20 to 15 years, making it easier for firefighters to access support.
A Step Towards a Safer Future
Todd Schierling, president of the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters' Association, praised the move, saying, "This expansion recognizes the dangers we encounter and demonstrates the government's dedication to our well-being."
The association will continue advocating for comprehensive health and safety measures for all firefighters.
Beyond the Presumptions
Firefighters can still claim workers' compensation for work-related cancers not on the list or if they don't meet the minimum employment period.
Sebastian Kallos, BC General Employees' Union vice-president, highlighted the increased risks for wildland firefighters, commending the province for addressing these concerns.
