A Historic Cycling Adventure
I recently embarked on a unique journey, cycling through the historic trails of Britain's camping pioneers. This 60-mile adventure, from Oxford to Surrey, was a celebration of the Camping and Caravanning Club's (CCC) 125th anniversary. What an incredible way to experience the evolution of camping and cycling in the UK!
Uncovering Hidden Paths
The journey began in Oxford, a city I thought I knew intimately. Yet, as I pedaled along the National Cycle Route 57 on my e-bike, I discovered a hidden side to this familiar place. The route felt like a secret passage, revealing a new perspective on the city's rich history. The CCC's origins, born from a friendship and a shared passion for camping, added a layer of intrigue to my ride.
Cycling Through Time
Thomas Hiram Holding, the CCC's founder, was a visionary. His invention of lightweight camping gear and his understanding of the health benefits of camping are still relevant today. As I cycled, I couldn't help but admire Holding's foresight in embracing new forms of transport and outdoor experiences. The transition from 'safety cycles' to e-bikes is a testament to the evolution of cycling, making adventures like mine more accessible and enjoyable.

The contrast between modern motorhomes and caravans and the humble tent is striking. While glamping and luxury camping are on the rise, it's reassuring to know that the CCC still welcomes traditional tent campers. My stop at Bella Vista Camping proved this, with its vast tent field and charming amenities. This blend of old and new is a fascinating aspect of the camping culture, catering to diverse preferences.

The Phoenix Trail, a former railway track, offered a serene escape from road traffic. The sight of red kites and the tranquility of the surroundings made me appreciate the beauty of nature that Holding and early campers cherished. The evolution of camping is evident at the Walton-on-Thames campsite. From homemade tents and hurricane lamps to modern motorhomes, the changes are profound. However, the most significant transformation is societal. The strict gender norms of the past would have prohibited my solo journey as a woman. Today, we celebrate the freedom to explore without such constraints. This shift is a powerful reminder of how far we've come.
